Thor: The Dark World' Breaks Box Office records

The Dark World will open in North America on Nov. 8. The film opened to a a sizeable $109.4 million total at the foreign box office a week ahead of its U.S. debut. 
The sequel to the 2011 comic book adaptation, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Hong Kong, bowed on Thursday and took $360,000 (HK$2.8 million) on its opening day. It was the highest grossing opening ever for a non-Chinese-language film in the month of October in the territory.The film raked in $2 million (HK$16 million) during its opening weekend, setting a new opening weekend record for an October release as well. 
The original Thor took only $2.5 million (HK$19.4 million) in the territory in 2011, an amount predicted to be surpassed in merely a week by the sequel. The strong performance proves the power of synergy for the studio, as the characters of Thor and his mischief-making brother Loki, played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, respectively, were brought to a wider audience in the territory via the 2012 blockbusterThe Avengers, which raked in $12.4 million (HK$96.7 million) and was the top grossing film of the year here.
Marvel's earlier release in 2013, Iron Man 3, also broke box office records when it opened in April. TheRobert Downey Jr. starrer made the top grossing four-day weekend of all time with $4.6 million (HK$36 million), and later stormed past the HK$100 million mark with $13.6 million (HK$106 million) to become the third highest grossing – and highest grossing non-James Cameron-directed film – of all time in Hong Kong.
